Some interesting examples from our collections

As we mark the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day and the end of World War II in The Far East, these covers from the Malay state of Johore take us back to those days.

Following the end of the Japaneses occupation, a British Military Administration was established in Malaya and these covers represent the Free Post period that accompanied the re-opening of the postal service.

Basically when they tried to restart the post they couldn't find the stamps, which were presumed to be with all the other supplies in Ceylon or on the way to Malaya. But they weren't. They had been ordered but not printed.

The service therefore started as Free Post, the expectation being that this would be a few days. in fact it lasted about 1 month, necessitating some urgent printing in London and airshipment to Malaya.
