SPOOF STAMPS FROM THE EARLY DAYS OF THE "BEDS & HERTS"

This page is taken from the Archives of the Beds & Herts Philatelic Society - today's St Albans, Harpenden & District Philatelic Society.

The Society was formed in 1933 in Harpenden which is on the former Midland line from St Pancras to Derby and the north. Its early members appear to have included employees of the LMS Railway that had been created in 1923 from, amongst others, the Midland Railway based in Derby and the LNWR based at Euston.

These spoof stamps from the archives suggest that old company loyalties and rivalries lived on.

The currency of a Josiah is probably a reference to Sir Josiah Stamp ( 1880 - 1941), Chairman of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway.
