POSTAL CARD FROM 1893 COLUMBIAN WORLD'S FAIR
The Exposition to mark the 40th Anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas in 1492 opened in Chicago in 1893.
As well as being marked by the world's first commemorative stamps - a set of sixteen stamps from 1 cent to 5 dollars issued by the USA - the event generated a large amount of ephemera and publicity material, including postal cards as in the accompanying example.
Our member specialises in collecting and researching such material and as he says " In these strange times a dealer who knows me too well, occasionally offers me things and I recently obtained this card from him. It is one of the rarer cards associated with the 1893 Columbian World's Fair"
He adds "My interests seem to have moved into trying to reveal the "backstory" with asistance from Professor Google. The street directories confirm the names, addresses and occupations. The census records give the christian names and a search for Welz and brewery reveals a strange world of brewerania (proving to me that stamp collecting is not so odd). It would be nice to think that the Wiez pictures recorded their strang bar before its demolition - but we will never know".
