Some interesting examples from our collections
This correspondence which shuttled between London and Hastings led me to research Robert Hollond (B. 1808, D. 1877)
He was a lawyer, the Whig Member of Parliament for Hastings from
1837 to 1852 and lived at Stanmore Hall, Middlesex. His career in Westminster seems insignificant but happily, he proved to have been a ballooning enthusiast.
In 1836 he funded an attempt on the world long distance record.
With two companions he took off from Vauxhall Gardens at 1-30pm
on 7 November. They travelled 500 miles, landing at Weilburgh,
east of Cologne. His record stood until 1907!
